The American Music Awards were held in Los Angeles on Sunday night and the show was full of talent & surprises. The performances were totally on-point, the award recipients were all deserving of their respective awards. I was more than happy to see my favourite three artists (of all time!) performing on stage at this year’s AMAs, and I was very impressed with the red carpet fashion too. So let’s discuss!
All White Everything
Miley Cyrus showed up wearing a white tuxedo suit by Versus Versace with black heels by Saint Laurent. Miley looked so sophisticated in her suit, with its gold safety pin detailing and was buttoned above the ankles. She kept the jewellery & make up to a minimum, though I do miss her gold necklaces, as it seems the suit is missing something. I was happy to see that Billy Ray, Tish & Brandi Cyrus were all in attendance to support Miley. She later closed the show, wearing a high-waisted two piece by Markus Lupfer that features cute kitten face print with matching print platform sandals. She teamed her performance of Wrecking Ball, (which you can watch here), with oversized PVC bracelets and earrings. I also want to shout out to Miley, “Happy 21st Birthday!”
My beloved and favourite singer, Christina Aguilera also attended the AMAs wearing a white long sleeved Maria Lucia Hogan dress, that features diamond cutouts on the sides and a side split. This dress is actually the same one from Christina’s Unforgettable perfume ad. The singer styled the look with Christian Louboutin ‘Very Niche’ peeptoes, Jimmy Choo crystal embellished clutch & Lorraine Schwartz jewellery to add to the Marilyn Monroe glamour. Christina then changed into a simple black jersey dress and tied her hair into a bun with a faux braid at the front, for her performance of Say Something with A Great Big World (which you can watch here).
Nicole Richie attended the awards show in white, wearing an Emilio Pucci dress with serious cutouts on the sides and on the back. The petite socialite & designer teamed the look with a gold circle link earrings & necklace and her own designed House of Harlow 1960 ‘Jude’ fringed box clutch. Nicole’s make up & hair were rather dramatic, if Cleopatra-like.
Zendaya also wore an all white everything look, in a Donna Karan Resort 2014 dress-and-pants look with Christian Louboutin ‘Exagona Kid’ cross-strap platforms, a Swarovski mini clutch and a rather ridiculous amount of John Hardy bracelets & bangles. A white mani-pedi and neutral makeup finished her look.
As mentioned above, Brandi Cyrus attended the awards with her family. Brandi wore a beautiful white all-over sequin embellished long sleeved mini dress with black & white sandals. Her strawberry blonde hair was side swept with dark red lipstick. I actually would have loved this look for Miley.
All Black Everything
Rihanna walked the red carpet in a black ensemble, donning Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2013. Her sequin bustier matches the sequins at the top of the skirt, which also features sheer lace, beaded and tulle detailing. This look was styled with very sparkling Lynn Ban, Repossi & Alex Mika jewellery. Rihanna then changed into a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2001 plunging sash adorned dress to perform Diamonds, (which you can watch here). Riri also went on to win the big Icon Award and Favourite Female Soul/R&B.
Lil Mama returned to the red carpet scene in a stunning black structured gown with green piping and jeweled centerpiece. I do like this dress a lot, but oh how I wish she didn’t match her hair to the gown. It’s just a no-no… So ignoring the hair disaster, I like this look. Lil Mama changed into a white ensemble, with turquoise hair, to perform with Waterfalls with TLC, (which you can watch here).
Katy Perry wearing a black Oscar de la Renta gown with diamanté polka dots and floral appliqué on the sheer tulle skirting, soft curls in her now-black coloured hair, styled with an Olympia Le-Tan ‘Webster’s New World Dictionary’ box clutch, an oversized floral ring and polka dot manicure, as well as Katy classic make up: red lipstick, shimmery eyeshadow & the flick. Katy performed Unconditionally (which you can watch here), wearing a Japanese Geisha kimono.
Mixing It Up
Ciara looked hot in a black mesh J. Mendel Spring 2014 dress. Her peek-a-boo graphic dress does show off a lot of her body, but in a sexy & sophisticated way. She kept her jewels to a minimum, letting her engagement ring and the dress do all the talking. I do wish she hadn’t worn her hair in the bob, but had given it some curls or waviness. Still, she looked hot!
Kylie & Kendall Jenner arrived in black & white. Both sisters wore jackets over their dresses but on the shoulders only. Kylie wore a two-piece by Maiyet and Giambatista Valli with Barbara Bui shoes, Bijules rings and a Balenciaga leather jacket, and Kendall wore a white cutout two-piece and a white tuxedo jacket by Keepsake, styling with a statement Dylanex necklace and Manolo Blahnik heels.
Zoe Saldana wore an asymmetrical Roland Mouret dress with lace layers and patent & silk panels, finished with smokey eyes and black patent Jimmy Choo ‘Desire’ sandals.
The One Direction boys were in attendance wearing black & grey attire, in casual and not-so-casual suits: Harry Styles wearing black suit & pants and shirt with grey flower, Liam Payne wearing grey leopard patterned shirt and grey peacoat, Niall Horan casual grey tshirt and loose bomber jacket, Louis Tomlinson wearing grey buttoned up polo shirt and suit jacket and Zayn Malik wearing a black turtleneck and grey double-breasted suit jacket. One Direction also performed Story Of My Life, (which you can watch here), and the boys also won two awards on the night: Favourite Duo/Band and Favourite Pop/Rock Album, congratulations!
Metallic Madness
Taylor Swift wore a Julian Macdonald gold sequined mini dress with a v-cut mesh panel and a contrasting gold textured waistbelt, and strappy sandals by Jimmy Choo. Taylor won big on the night, winning Favourite Country Female, Favourite Pop/Rock Female, Favourite Country Album and Favourite Artist Of The Year!
Emma Roberts wearing Lanvin shimmery metallic maxi tube dress and Casadei purple satin heels, which matched her Rodo purple satin clutch & manicure. Silver grey metallic eyeshadow and tousled hair finished her beautiful look.
Kelly Osbourne wore a grey Rami Al Ali gown and nude ALDO ‘Malina’ heels. She styled the look with an Edie Parker glittery clutch and jewellery by Erickson Beamon Rocks. As if her look wasn’t loud enough, Kelly finished with a braided updo & full fringe and spikes in her hair.
A Splash of Colour
Jennifer Hudson looked fabulous in a neon orange by Christian Dior that has an under-colour of pink, worn with neutral pink lipstick, metallic blue eyeliner and matching manicure. JHud styled the look with Charlotte Olympia ‘I Heart You’ silver sandals and a matching orange clutch.
Ariana Grande wore a fully sequined red dress by Dolce & Gabbana. Her sweetheart was worn with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Sergio Rossi heels. Her big hair was portioned in a half up-half down look with mainly neutral make up with a cotton candy pink manicure and simple silver jewellery. Ariana also won Favourite New Artist of the Year and she performed The Way & Tattooed Heart (which you can watch here).
Funny gal Sarah Silverman was a bright star wearing Lela Rose. Her yellow asymmetrical dress features ruched detailing, styled with Swarovski jewels and an embellished Lancaster clutch as well as black peeptoe sandals by Greymer, finished with pink lipstick.
Lady Gaga arrived in ridiculous Gaga fashion; on a horse. I’m totally over her over-dramatic entrances and stunts. Her lilac cutout dress with a large silver body harness over the dress, were both by Versace, was a pretty outfit though. Her super long blonde hair and neutral make up do suit the Gaga demure look, but it’s no secret that the dress is too small for her. She later changed twice; first for her on-stage performance of Do What U Want with R. Kelly, (which you can watch here), Gaga wore an embellished mini bodysuit with fringe detail, an oversized jacket and a removable skirt, and then afterwards she changed into an embellished silver gown with a frontal zip and split.
