Last night (November 20) the annual American Music Awars 2016 took place in downtown Los Angeles, at the Microsoft Theater. These awards are usually one of my favourite to satch, and report the red carpet preshow, though this one was a little lack lustrous in comparison to previous years. Top model and fashion favourite Gigi Hadid co-hosted the show with comedian Jay Pharoah, putting on a great show together. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the Killer Fashion Best Dressed List for this year’s awards.
The Best Dressed
Model Hannah Jeter (neé Davis) looked gorgeous as she stepped out for the awards, donning a sheer metallic embroidered gown. The tall beauty wore one of my favourite designers, Zuhair Murad, a sleeveless mulberry purple gown that featured glittering blossom motifs all over. The cheekily sheer dress was perfectly teamed with black underwear, and also featured a round neck as well as bell sleeves and a floor-sweeping train. I absolutely love this look, and with her slicked back hairstyle and additional sparkling jewels, the model perfected this look with barely there sandals, a mini box clutch and soft smokey with a shimmer pink lip to finish.
The Hostess with the Mostest
Before she took on the role of co-presenting the awards ceremony, top model Gigi Hadid walked the red carpet in a bardot white dress by Roberto Cavalli. The lace look was very signature of the designer’s creations with its boho and chevron details that also featured a peplum tier from the straight neckline. Long sleeves and a relaxed fit, it was the perfect first look to the night. The flawless makeup and the off-red lipstick, the relaxed & voluminous combed back hairstyle and the silver choker necklace completed her look beautifully.
For the show, Gigi followed in the fashion footsteps of many female hosts before her; with numerous outfit changes. On stage she started in a custom-made crystals-clad jumpsuit by Atelier Versace that shone from every angle. The silver look featured satin trims on the shoulders and an opening zip that showed off her satin bra
Her next look was by Julien Macdonald; a figure-hugging dress that featured a plunging neckline, with cut outs on the waist and was covered in patent square embellishments, creating a croc-like look to the dress. It cut off above the ankles showing off her strappy sandals and was worn with a matching choker.
Dazzling in black, Gigi opted for a black gown by Nicolas Jebran that featured exaggerated shoulders, a vertical cut out on the front with a mid split on the skirt. The high neck, long sleeve gown was styled with a clipped bouffant hairstyle, nude lipstick and barely there sandals.
A fan of the British designer, Gigi’s next outfit was a white co-ordinates by Julien Macdonald. It featured silver & black embroidery and embellishments as well as fringing on the jacket sleeves and shoulders, and a plunging neckline with matching shorts and silver leather sandals.
For her closing look of the show, Gigi opted for a brilliantly red gown by Atelier Versace, that featured wrap details, cut outs and a long skirt on one side with a short cut on the other. The glistening scarlet colour was complimented by its two textures, one being metallic and the other crystal-clad, and was a perfect choice for ending the night, teamed with red glitter pumps, her slicked back hair & red lipstick to finish.
Classic Black & White
Opting for a dramatic flair, Tinashe looked great in her Michael Costello choice at the AMAs. The off-the-shoulder sweetheart dress was a sheer black & white creation that featured a bodice cinched in by a black waistbelt, with a thigh-high leg cut on the side and billowing bell sleeves. She added pearl-adorned ankle straps sandals, a curly updo and a blinging torque necklace to finish.
Not only did singer & performer Ciara look gorgeous, but she also showcased her little baby bump! Doning a black and white custom-made gown by Stephanie Rolland, the tall brondie stepped out in a long-sleeved high-neck top with a ballooned waterfall cut skirt that was all sorts of appropriate glamour. The high-low of the skirt showed off Ciara’s toned legs & ankle strap heels, and the demure bardot ponytail, nude lips and soft grey smokey eyes were perfect finishing touches, but CiCi holding her baby bump was the highlight of this look. Congratulations to Ciara & husband Russell Wilson!
Rocking the red carpet like a pro, model Karlie Kloss wore Versace to the AMAs and looked fabulous doing so. The one-sleeved look featured pleated detail on the bust, and a mini skirt cut on one side with a longer full-length cut on the other, as well as alternating black & ice blue panels. Her above-the-ankle shoes and sleek ponytail completed her look, along with an array of silver jewellery.
White Hot
Halsey walked the red carpet in a white biker jumpsuit that featured a waistbelt and high neck, complete with a pearlescent white box clutch and barely there sandals. The singer’s shaved hairstyle, subtle makeup and white manicure & rings rounded up the look, that was a little lacking oomph for me. During the show, Halsey performed “Closer” with The Chainsmokers.
Opting for more demure fashion as the months go on, Lady Gaga attended the awards starting the night in a white pantsuit by Versace. The look was teamed with a plunging white silk bodysuit and a white fedora too, complete with an updo, cat eyes and pink lips. During the show, Lady Gaga also performed her song “Million Reasons”, which you can watch here.
Taraji P. Henson opted for a look that I’m not 100% on board with; an oversized white shirt by Céline and exposed black lace bra with Jimmy Choo heels. The actress added a slicked down Rapunzel ponytail with dark purple lipstick, strong brows, an array of rings and a diamond necklace that completed her look.
Glitz & Glam
Nina Dobrev wore an interesting shortsuit to the awards, as she donned this sparkling embellished look from Zuhair Murad. The brunette beauty’s cropped shorts & jacket were adorned in reflective studs that she wore over black sheer corset, and black ankle strap pumps by Stella Luna, for a very cool but chic ensemble. I love the black lapels on the blazer and that textured clutch too from Edie Parker. Her look was rounded up with silver-painted braids and sideswept hair, a pavé ear cuff and smokey eyes to finish.
Wearing blue sparkles for the night, Rachel Platten attended donning this gown by Pamella Rolland. The blue sequin gown featured a v-cut neckline, a sheer polka dot panel along and around the waist with the sleeves half-sequin half-sheer too. A hexagon-shaped clutch, dark smokey eyes & exaggerated lashes with nude lips and straight hair completed the actress’ red carpet look.
Stepping out in sequins, Keltie Knight worked the red carpet in a cream jumpsuit from Mac Duggal. The v-plunging neckline and the sleeveless finish were great details to this figure-hugging number, teamed with tan peeptoe platforms and minimal jewellery. You’d be forgiven if you thought Rihanna attended the AMAs, because actress Keke Palmer sure is looking like a mini-me version as of late. The Scream Queens starlet wore a risqué outfit donning a chain mail cropped co-ordinates by designer Natalia Fedner, that she teamed with a light pink faux fur coat. Worn with same designer choker necklaces and Saint Laurent heels, the pixie cut brunette added pink-tinted glasses, silver-grey eyeshadow and a pink shimmer lip to finish. Apparently the look was inspired by Toni Braxton’s “He Wasn’t Man Enough” music video, though I’m seeing a lot of Rihanna at the CFDA Fashion Awards 2014 too.
Young actress & singer Hailee Steinfeld looked great wearing this playsuit from Elie Saab. The plunging mini was an array of teal & silver sequins with sheer lines in between, with a starry motif caped detail, all cinched in at the waist with a teal leather belt that featured an embellished buckle. Gold ankle strap sandals, wavy voluminous hair and a dark pink lipstick completed her red carpet look.
Black Beauties
Chrissy Teigen sure caused headlines with her ridiculously high leg cuts as she attended the awards wearing this black dress from Yousef Akbar. The long-sleeved dress seemed demure from the front but once the model turned to either side, the slits made it obvious that Chrissy was neither wearing underwear nor seemed to care. Personally, I think it’s too far and I don’t understand why women think it’s okay not to wear underwear! She styled the look with a lot of golden jewellery, strappy sandals by Dsquared2.
Also opting for a big cut out, Laura Marano walked the red carpet donning an LBD by August Getty Atelier. A shorter cut of the original, this one-sleeved suede mini dress also featured lace-up & fringe detail on the forearm and a triangular cut out on the waist. She teamed the look with thigh-high black boots, wavy hair and silver jewels. Click here to buy Laura Marano’s dress by August Getty Atelier!
Presenter Rachel Smith wore a similar style to Laura Marano, also opting for a black one-sleeved mini dress. The LBD featured an asymmetrical neckline with lace-up detail across the waist and down one side of the skirt, styled with a top knot and heels by Stuart Weitzman.
Teyana Taylor looked gorgeous and very glamorous as she attended the awards in an off-the-shoulder gown by Steven Khalil. The statement gown easily stood out on the red carpet amongst the other looks, with its deep sweetheart neckline on the lace bustier bodice, and the sheer black lace overlay with hints of metallic embroidery. Her wet-look hairstyle added oomph to the look, which the actress completed with heels by Valentino, a vintage diamond necklace and a statement ring by Sambac Jewelry.
Milla Jovovich attended the AMAs wearing this beautiful black gown from Elie Saab. Her wide-v cut was similar in style to the above look from Hailee Steinfeld, with lines of sequin & sheer as well as starry motifs, around the waist and lower sleeves. The mid split on the skirt showed off her velvet peeptoe sandals, teamed with a black clutch and silver jewellery to finish.
A Splash of Colour
Miss America 2017 Savvy Shields attended the AMAs wearing a red two-piece by Sherri Hill. The sleeveless high roundneck crop top was worn with a high-waisted skirt that featured a high leg slit with zip detail and a train. She added statement drop earrings, metallic clutch and gold sandals were all from Scarlet Clothing, rounded up with a bouffant chignon.
Adding some fun on the red carpet, Renée Bargh looked chic and sweet donning a mini dress by Charles & Ron. The Maltese design featured a white body with puple & green floral embroidery, sheer lace sleeves and pink cuffs with green trims, and a black satin bow around the neck. A top knot, kohl-rimmed smokey eyes and black peeptoe heels by Tony Bianco completed her look.
To my surprise Noah Cyrus walked the red carpet as her own artist, sans family, following the release of her debut single. The youngest of the Cyrus sisters, she wore a sheer overlay gown that featured multicoloured floral embroidery with a crop top & shorts underneath. I do wish she had opted for a different hairstyle, as the straight hair bores this otherwise fun look, that was well styled with blue metallic sandals.
All eyes were on Selena Gomez when she stepped out, donning a red gown by Prada. Following a break from the spotlight, this was a wondrous return, and her fashion choice proves that simple is always chic. The ball gown featured a fitted scooped bodice, which she styled with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and Cartier jewels, a low ponytail and nude lipstick.
Jess Bauer is a newbie to my Best Dressed List, as this brunette beauty stepped out in a chic nude coloured cropped co-ordinates from L’atiste by Amy. The crop top featured a cut out with a bardot panel across the neckline and was teamed with high-waisted trousers and T-bar sandals. A sparkling choker necklace by Jewelry Bar USA, silver clutch by De Blossom Collection and a high wrap-around ponytail rounded up the youngster’s awards attire.
