Best Dressed at MTV Video Music Awards 2015

Gosh it seems like forever that I’ve written up a Best Dressed post, so thank goodness for last night’s MTV Video Music Awards 2015 (August 30th), that were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. As we all know, the fashion and the antics of the VMAs are infamous, and it excites us all whether we like to admit it or not. I for one was super stoked because my favourite gal Miley Cyrus was hosting the show this year, despite people thinking she’d never get that gig following the VMAs 2013. A new exciting addition to this year’s VMAs is that the iconic Moonman has been redesigned by the one & only Jeremy Scott, as well as rolling out his own-designed red carpet for the big pre-show.

Best Dressed

Among all the fun and dramatic fashion, Demi Lovato stole the show for me in this baby pink Nicolas Jebran Couture mini dress. Her pink choice was featured an all over peekaboo mosaic-cut out finish on a nude body with a plunging neckline, an open back and an exposed zip. Demi kept her look focused on the dress by adding nude pointed pumps by Christian Louboutin, a matching pink manicure, rings and a few bracelets, along with crystal drop earrings all by Suzanne Kalan, a slicked back wet look hairstyle and dewy makeup. It was a perfect finish for this red carpet. Demi later performed Cool For the Summer, which you can watch here, wearing a black & purple cut out bodysuit and over-the-knee black boots.

Vanessa Hudgens looked absolutely stunning at the VMAs, channeling her signature boho vibes perfectly. Wearing Naeem Khan to the awards, Vanessa was in her element in this flowy floral appliqué gown, which featured a plunging neckline. She upped the ante with a crazy amount of arm candy including jewels by Le Vian, Pasquale Bruni, Casa Reale, Jacquie Aiche, Norman Silverman and Lorraine Schwartz, as well as an Edie Parker oval marble clutch and sandals by Stuart Weitzman. With a braided hairstyle, gold glitter eyeshadow and an off-pink lip colour, Vanessa definitely stole the show alongside Demi. Click to buy Vanessa Hudgens’ VMAs dress, in red!

Oh Miley!

Well, Miley Cyrus sure put on a great show hosting the VMAs this year. And like many of the hostesses before her, she opted for kooky fashion for the red carpet entrance, donning this strappy barely there ensemble. The silver leather bondage-esque one-piece by Versace featured vertical straps across her chest and neck, with chandelier drop gems to cover her front and behind, which makes everyone wonder if Miley was wearing underwear or not. Provocative or sexy? Who knows, but Miley worked the look with silver over-the-knee platform boots, simple jewellery by Lorraine Schwartz and a tight ponytail with faux dreadlocks held together by a Medusa-adorned scrunchie.

For her post-show outfit, Miley headed to the press room following the awards, wearing a bubblegum pink latex dress by House of Holland, which also featured balloon-like lettering and exposed nails that spelt out “DO IT”. But of course, Miley didn’t stop there, adding a silver platform heels, blue peace sign earrings and a pig-ears & bow hairpiece. Yup, she did that. Miley also announced her new album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, during the show, which you can listen to here.

During the show, Miley wore an impressive count of nine outfits on stage, opening the show in a glittering & plunging jumpsuit by The Blonds. She then switched into an extreme cut-out white “dress” by Versace, with white knee-high boots and a fluffy scrunchie; then into a clear PVC mini that featured pastel smarties in strategic places, adding white sunglasses to the look; next she returned to Versace in a shimmering pink leather trouser and strappy bra with iconic Medusa heads covering her chest, added oversized pink sunglasses and switched the blonde dreads for pink ones; returning to the blonde dreads, Miley then wore a red mini skirt that featured an oversized lips motif on the front with an eyes motif bralette, a neon orange visor and the white boots from before; Miley then wore a rainbow flag, she was literally inside a rectangular placard and attended a whole lot of rainbow arm candy in support of the LGBT; then Miley switched it up for a silver very high-rise leotard and a tinsel-covered coat with a tinsel scrunchie and pink dreads; then she changed into a silver mirror & gemstone embellished two piece with sheer panels on the trousers, and rainbow-coloured dreads; before for closing the show and performing Dooo It!, which you can watch hereshe switched into a multicoloured one-legged, one-armed look that featured the strappy bra design again, this time with an eye and tongue motif, complete with bedazzled peace sign glasses. WOW. Well, fair play to Miley Cyrus. One of the many things I’ll always support about Miley is her confidence, and how she just doesn’t care what other people may think. You could see Miley was extremely happy the whole time hosting the show, and we’ve seen many strange outfits worn by previous VMAs hosts!

Black Beauties

Supporting her younger sister, Brandi Cyrus looked gorgeous in her black mini dress by Cengiz Abazoglu, which featured a Jacquard & lace bodice, and a glittering sequins skirt finish, with a cut-out and matte panel that snakes around the bottom of the skirt, matching the waistband. I love the inverted-v neckline, and Brandi’s strappy heels by Saint Laurent, the snake armlet from Broken English Jewellery and Roseark jewels were the perfect finishing touches. Gorgeous beachy waves and dewy makeup completed her look perfectly.

Arden Cho was in attendance to the VMAs, donning this beautiful black embellished two-piece by Mac Duggal. The high-neck crop top had slightly capped shoulders, and both the top & skirt featured sheer panels with all-over sparkling sequins, that just about gave us glimpse of her Le Silla red heels. Her hair & makeup was totally on point, with a red lip and minimal jewels by Wonder Lust Co to finish.

Donning back to the awards, Charlotte McKinney wore this cut out long-sleeved dress, which featured silver metallic strap on one shoulder and on the waist too. The dress’ skirt cut out showed off her long legs and silver sandals beautifully that really completed her look. Blonde wavy hair and exaggerated lashes rounded up her look.

Kelly Osbourne opted for a pinstriped jumpsuit with a double-breasted feature on the bodice. Gold-toed pointed pumps by Jerome C. Rousseau, a selection of jewellery from Anne Sisteron and red lipstick with her now-signature lilac hair were the finishing touches to her look.

Wearing a plunging black & polka dot sheer midi dress, Liz Hernandez looked great in this House of CB ‘Niida’ long-sleeved look. It was sexy, with the high leg panels, and added to the va va voom with that gorgeous smile of hers, side swept waves and pavé ankle strap sandals. Click to buy Liz Hernandez’ VMAs dress!

Martha Hunt looked great on the red carpet, donning an embellished black mini dress by Georges Chakra Couture with sheer capped sleeves. The look also featured a sparkling pavé waistbelt which looked great with her lace up heels and minimal jewellery.

Joining Martha Hunt and the Taylor Swift squad, Lily Aldridge worked her tall frame with this plunging black gown by Alexandre Vauthier Couture. She added Stuart Weitzman shoes to the cut out look, which hugged her in all the right places, and styled her straight hair & smokey eyes with accessories from Jennifer Meyer, Anita Ko and an Edie Parker clutch too.

A new one to the Killer Fashion books, FKA Twigs rocked the red carpet sans beau Robert Pattinson, wearing an Atelier Versace corset gown. The sexy lingerie-like look was worn with Swarovski-clad undergarments and was a more fitted version than its runway original. Red lips, voluminous curls and strappy heels completed her look.

Giving the red carpet her absolute A-game, Rocsi Diaz looked all sorts of hot in this black House of CB ‘Romana’ midi dress, with its asymmetrical and cheeky slash cut out on the bodice. The sleeveless cut out dress was styled with gorgeous mint & black butterfly sandals by Sophia Webster. These are gorgeous, seriously! Smokey eyes and a straight hairstyle rounded up her look beautifully. Click to buy Rocsi Diaz’ VMAs dress! // Click here to buy Rocsi Diaz’ VMAs shoes!

Golden Girls

Nicki Minaj walked the red carpet in a stunning gold Labourjoisie gown. Giving us plenty of body on show, with a plunging neckline and sheer sections, this hourglass dress hugged her body to a tee. Keeping to her black hair, a fringed straight do, winged eyeliner and minimal jewellery completed her awards look. Nicki opened the show performing ‘Trini Dem Girls’ & ‘The Night is Young’, which you can watch heredonning a red and nude mesh fringed outfit with a giant feathered crown headdress. She sounded and looked great, and Taylor Swift made a surprise duet performance too for ‘Bad Blood’ – amazing! Nicki Minaj also won the award for Best Hip Hop video for ‘Anaconda’.

VMAs veteran Britney Spears also attended the awards in a gold & silver sheer Labourjoisie dress, although she opted for a mini instead. Matching gold & silver sandals and a braided rainbow ponytail, along with pavé earrings and extreme eyeliner completed the singer’s look.

JoJo was also in attendance, donning a gold mini dress with Egyptian-esque motifs and a black sequin-to-sheer asymmetrical cape. A straight hairstyle, smokey eyes and black sandals rounded up her awards look.

Opting for sweet & sexy, Bailey De Young wore a strapless nude-coloured mini with a gold lace overlay. Upping the gold factor, she added strappy heels to her look, along with a cream clutch, minimal jewels and a neat ponytail.

A Splash of Colour

The beautiful Jeannie Mai attended the awards in this stunning Falguni & Shane Peacock gown that was quite the showstopper. The cropped look featured a sweetheart top and a flowing skirt with sheer striped design, floral, star & bird print and the number 25 printed largely on the front too. She added the FIORI Couture ‘Angel of LA’ waistbelt to her look, as well as their ‘Alta’ arm cuff, as well as earrings by LZZR Jewelry. Jeannie’s look was complete with a bouffant textured ponytail and flawless makeup. Gorgeous!

Rocking a lemon-lime yellow look, Rachel Smith was colourful on the red carpet in this Kayat midi dress. The sophisticated v-cut choice was embellished with lines of beading and sequins, which contrasted with her Stuart Weitzman sandals. A nude manicure, smokey eyes and a textured wavy hairstyle, Rachel rounded up her look with jewellery by Neil Lane Jewelry.

Opting for a multicoloured combination, Kat Graham wore this deep sweetheart strapless by Versace to the awards. Her dress featured coral, gold, black, purple, green & sky blue with a tulip skirt finish. She accessorized the look with a Kotur lantern clutch, black pumps by Casadei, jewellery by Vita Fede and revealed her bronzed makeup was done using Wet N Wild products. A wavy hairstyle and Kat was all ready for the party.

Gigi Hadid looked fabulous in her saffron-yellow jacquard dress by Emilia Wickstead. The head-turning dress features a v-cut neckline, long sleeves and a high front split on the skirt for subtle sexiness that showed off the model’s long legs and her triple strap sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti. Gigi added stunning rings by Ofira Jewelz and Lorraine Schwartz to her look, finishing with a body chain drop necklace also by Ofira Jewelz and a slicked back bouffant hairstyle, bronze goddess makeup and of course, her girl squad. Click to buy Gigi Hadid’s VMAs dress!

Singers Shannon Bex & Aubrey O’Day of Dumblonde opted for matching colours, donning these candy pink & black dresses to the VMAs. Both ladies wore Nicolas Jebran Couture dresses, Shannon (left) wearing a high-leg split & long-sleeved dress with black sheer sections on the bodice and one sleeve, whereas Aubrey (right) wore a long-sleeved mini dress with a structured design and peekaboo sheer sleeves. Teaming their look with black heels, nude manicures and no jewellery, Shannon & Aubrey looked absolutely on point. And I adore Aubrey’s braided fishtail hairstyle too!

Arielle Vandenberg attended in this beautiful teal blue number, donning a strapless v-cut dress. The velvet texture added to its oozing sex appeal, as did the high leg split and Arielle’s beautiful windswept hairstyle. Metallic barely there sandals and minimal jewellery were the perfect finishing touches to her look.

Attending the VMAs in a fun & flirty dress, model Stella Maxwell stepped on to the red carpet in a black strapless Moschino by Jeremy Scott creation, which featured an exaggerated cascading peplum detail. The pink peplum was graffiti’d with lettering, and the bottom of the skirt was also graffiti’d for a fresh finish. Her black strappy heels and flawless makeup, along with that slicked back hairstyle worked into the look so perfectly.

Maria Menounos looked great in her two-tone dark blue & black dress from Lanvin. Her asymmetrical strapless choice was sweet yet sassy, as I love the subtle drama of the fold over along the neckline. The midi dress was teamed with Stuart Weitzman sandals, a sleek top knot hairstyle, drop earrings and gorgeous makeup. Love everything about this, from head to toe.

Metallic Madness

Musician Lindsey Stirling attended in a black embellished midi dress with capped sleeves, that featured a slight ombré effect on the body. Her fiery red hair was styled into a ponytail, and patent pale blue peeptoe sandals completed her look.

Chanel West Coast joined the party, donning this black & gold ensemble, that had rather sheer lace panels on the lower-half of the dress showing off her underwear. The gold embroidery and trims are rather beautiful so it’s a pity about the sheer skirt as it takes away from how classy this could have been. Gold metallic sandals, a minaudière and flicked eyeliner completed the rapping blonde’s look.

Also opting for an embellished mini dress, Kelsea Ballerini walked the red carpet in this silver & gun-metal v-cut mini dress. It featured a floral brocade design, which was complimented by her embellished strappy heels. Her long blonde hair and dewy makeup look were the perfect finishing touches for this.

One of my favourite looks on the night was Katie Stevens’, as she wore a beautiful midnight blue gown by Yousef Aljasmi. Her plunging neckline dress with Celtic-like design and a fully embellished skirt was breathtakingly beautiful against her complexion and dark red hair. She complimented the dress with an emerald-coloured minaudière and cocktail ring by Kimberly McDonald Fine Jewelry, Chelsea Paris heels, pink lips and smokey eyes.

Taylor Swift opted for something we did not expect; a metallic houndstooth cropped two-piece by Ashish. Her long-sleeved crop top and jogger pants look were complimented with Christian Louboutin ‘Pumpstagram’ heels and an array of Ofira Jewelz rings. Though I’m not a huge fan of this look, I admire that she pulled this out of the bag instead of a gown. Extreme cat eyeliner, a full side fringed ponytail hairstyle and Taylor’s entire ‘Bad Blood’ girl squad, this was definitely a red carpet first. Taylor Swift also opened the show with Nicki Minaj wearing a red & nude fringed mini by Yousef Aljasmi and custom-made booties by Stuart Weitzman, which you can watch here, as well as winning awards for Best Pop Video & Best Female Video for ‘Blank Space’, Best Collaboration for ‘Bad Blood’ with Kendrick Lamar and the big award, Best Video of the Year for ‘Bad Blood’, congratulations TayTay!!

White Hot

Zuri Hall looked beautiful in a white off-the-shoulder sweetheart mini dress by Misha Collection. Adding a mint-coloured pyhton-patterned clutch by Kotur and black strappy platform sandals, Zuri’s hair & makeup were truly perfect for the event. Click to buy Zuri Hall’s VMAs dress, the longer, black version!

Jasmine Villegas also opted for white, wearing a satin & sheer dress that featured draped sleeves, with a split overlay skirt from the waist. Some might say that it’s a bit frumpy, but I say it’s comfy and chic. Embellished and yellow strap sandals, a pewter blue mani-pedi and gold earrings with a pulled back messy ponytail, this was the perfect relaxed look to the VMAs. Jasmine also revealed that she wore Wet N Wild makeup for the event too.

Notable Mentions

Menswear

The menswear section was pretty good too, some looks were definitely on point, and some looks were…well rather questionable. My favourite looks of the night include artist OMI who looked great in his royal blue tuxedo jacket and black pants look; the boys of Walk The Moon who opted for paint splattered suits, which is a fun & bold move but very welcomed at the VMAs; Austin Butler who looked great in his pristine clean suit; and Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars, who wore a yellow & black Versace shirt, skipped the red carpet but we saw them win the award for Best Male Video for ‘Uptown Funk’ – congratulations guys! Miguel rocked his velvet patterned blazer and extreme ripped jeans look for the uber casual chic look; while Brooklyn Beckham attended in a white blazer; Travis Mills, whose burgundy leather jacket was a fresh change-up for the classic black biker; Jeremy Scott who of course matched his self-designed red carpet to his self-designed rainbow tuxedo; young Matthew Espinosa looked great in a white look and that blue camouflage-like bomber jacket; and couple Helen Lasichanh & Pharrell Williams whose double-denim look puts that ridiculous WTF moment Katy Perry tried last year to absolute shame.

VMAs/WTF Moment

We’ve all seen the moments that make VMAs history, that we won’t forget about for years. And yes, the VMAs are the red carpet and the place to wear kooky fashion and have a bit of fun, but sometimes the stars get it that bit too wrong…
