The first ever BBC Music Awards took place yesterday evening in London, at the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. Presented by BBC radio hosts Fearne Cotton & Chris Evans, it promised a good night of music, awards and laughter. Now, maybe because it was the first ceremony of these awards, but the red carpet was quite a let down. Not many of the nominees were in attendance either, which doesn’t help but there were only a handful of great fashion moments, and more WTF moments… So without further ado, here’s who has made the Killer Fashion list.
The Ladies
I’ll start with the best dressed, and that was definitely Paloma Faith. The singer wore a leather bodice gown, that was strapless and featured ruched detailing, which she wore with a slightly embellished strappy leather waistbelt and gorgeous red, black & gold pumps. I adore her matching red lips & red nails, and she let her blonde down for lengthy Hollywood curls. Gorgeous! Paloma Faith later performed “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” and “Changing” with Sigma, which you can watch here. She also performed “God Only Knows” with Sir Tom Jones later in the show, which you can watch here.
Fearne Cotton continued her red carpet winning streak in this iridescent blue sequin paneled dress. Her knee-length choice was teamed with architectural sandals, dark eye makeup and a voluminous hairstyle.
Singer and Dancing With the Stars contestant Pixie Lott rocked the red carpet in her white two-piece ensemble. She wore a textured floral embroidered high-waisted and full-length column skirt with a white bandeau that featured an oversized bow. A silver gem-embellished mini box clutch, a chic swept back updo, pink smokey eye with exaggerated lashes and the trending ‘double-earrings’ completed her look beautifully.
DJ & presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford almost got it right, in this black & white mesh look, that featured sheer mesh paneling on the bodice and zig zag borders along the neckline, shoulders and bust with a full skirt. Her hair & makeup was also on point…but then she wore it all with those shoes. Oh dear. A let down for what could have been perfection.
Ellie Goulding was also in attendance on the red carpet, wearing a beige-tan coloured suit, with lace up detailing on the trouser legs and long ties at the top… Just why? I really don’t understand why those lace up details are necessary. Similar to Sarah-Jane Crawford’s look, this could have been perfect. Black pumps, and voluminous brushed hair with a nude lip finished her look. Ellie Goulding also performed “Outside” with Calvin Harris, which you can watch here.
Singer Jess Glynne didn’t completed miss the ball here, as she wore a slinky black gown with full sleeves and a statement necklace. However it’s the paneled shoes and that overly dark eye makeup that ruined the look for me; the shoes are just the wrong choice for the already-long dress, and the eye makeup just washes the singer out. A selection of rings, a nude pink lip and her signature curls completed this look. Jess Glynne also performed “Rather Be” with Clean Bandit, which you can watch here.
Another look that unfortunately went wrong, was Ella Henderson’s. She had been rather on point lately, but this look just does not cut it. Sticking to her all black everything attire, the former X Factor singer wore a jumpsuit with a keyhole detail showing off her bodychain underneath. The frumpy fit of this look is what annoys me, I also would’ve preferred had she an open plunging top rather than the keyhole, and then there’s all that hair on top of it… A gold & black striped box clutch, black pumps and dark red lipstick rounded up the singer’s look. Ella Henderson also performed “Ghost” with fellow singer Labrinth, which you can watch here.
Menswear
The men in attendance did a pretty great job at rocking it on the red carpet. The boys of One Direction wore coordinated monochrome looks. I especially love Niall Horan’s check shirt, Zayn Malik’s creeper shoe choice and that contrasting shirt, Liam Payne’s classy overcoat, Louis Tomlinson’s pocket square and his patterned peekaboo socks and Harry Styles’ biker shoe choice. As a whole they looked pretty damn good. One Direction also performed “Steal My Girl”, which you can watch here.
One Direction’s pal and frequent songwriter, Ed Sheeran attended in his usual casual attire, donning a black sweater & jeans on the red carpet. He later changed into a red & navy flannel shirt for his performance of “Sing”, which you can watch here. Ed Sheeran also won British Artist of the Year!
Take That performed their song “These Days”, which you can watch here, and looked smashing in monochrome suits. Their performance had quite the standing ovation. Cody Wise also opted for a monochrome look, with futuristic white high tops & black contrasting straps. Calvin Harris chose a black look with a deep aubergine purple jacket, for this hint of colour. John Newman sure went the extra mile with his chain tassel accented shoulders jacket, rolled up revealing a silvery grey lining, teamed with an open top white shirt, ankle-grazing trousers to show off his white socks & black shoes look complete with gelled hair. Sir Tom Jones looked great in his off-grey & navy attire, donning a soft patterned suit, navy shirt & black tie with a contrasting print pocket square. And singer Jermaine Jackson also opted for a good suit, attending in an aubergine top half that featured a gold button-chain fastening with green-grey trousers and a patterned bow tie.
