Yves Saint Laurent: Black Opium Autumn/Winter 2014 Look

At the beginning of the month I had an exclusive appointment at the Yves Saint Laurent beauty counter in Brown Thomas, for a one-on-one consultation with YSL Northern European makeup artist Fred Létailléur. Meeting this renowned makeup artist was so exciting (he’s featured in many of YSL’s emails!), and together we discussed their new products, range and Autumn 2014 look for their latest ad campaign Black Opium Eau de Parfum that features model Edie Campbell. Fred also gave me a demonstration & did my makeup for me too. Merci beacoup Fred! Below I’ve listed the products Fred used to create the look, along with some notes or tips I learnt from him.

Black Opium Eau de Parfum Autumn/Winter 2014

Top Secrets Toning And Cleansing Water – Fred started with a light & refreshing wipe away of any excess oils or makeup remnants from my evening before to start the face prep from scratch. This makeup remover is light and its micellar water removes the makeup and leaves skin supple and moisturized. Available at €34

Or Rouge Lotion – Next was the lotion step, and this is part of YSL’s newest skincare range, Or Rouge. The great thing about this range is that only four products are included and make for the perfect skincare selection, using fewer products on your face without losing out on the benefits. This lotion, like the rest of the range, is a complex made with the luxurious scent & concentrate of precious Pistil of Saffron. It leaves the skin appearing more radiant, firmer and more uniform within minutes. Available at €110

Or Rouge Crème – This moisturizing cream features the same Pistil of Saffron extracts and targets smoothing out fine lines, wrinkles, smile lines & roughness, as well as visibly reducing dullness and dark spots on the skin. For the application, Fred used the little spoon tool with which you use the smallest amount for the entire face, therefore it will last longer than most and is worth its value. Available at €320

Fusion Ink Foundation – As you all know I’ve already used this fabulous new foundation by YSL, (read my review here). Fred was impressed that I knew the product and its features, and especially so my correct shade (with thanks to Michelle too!). It delivers flawless coverage that lasts up to 24 hours, even while using the smallest amount of product, while still feeling ultra-light on your skin. Available at €40

CC Crème Colour Corrector – Like the foundation, I’ve used & love their CC crème, which was the next step in our beauty look. It visibly corrects the appearance of skin tone irregularities for that allover dewy glow. Available at €34

Touché Éclat – For me, no look is complete without having used the signature and now-iconic complexion highlighter pen. I’ve seen many different ways of using it; dotting around the eye area, creating a correction tick shape, simply drawing a semi circle beneath; and Fred used the correction tick shape around my under eye areas, as well in the corners of my eyes and around my mouth too. (Read up on more Touché Éclat tips here) Available at €35

Gloss Volupté in #210 Beige Nu – Now that the skin & foundation were prepped and laid down, it was time to create the eye look from the Black Opium campaign. Now, y’all are probably thinking “but that’s a lipgloss…” and you’d be right. But that’s exactly what Fred used to create this glossy wet look smokey eye! The colour of this is perfect for the look as well, as its not shimmery and very muted. Applying this gloss on the lids achieved that sultry wet look that stayed all day long. Available at €25

Couture Palette Collector – Though this palette features five different shades, for the look Fred only applied a smidgen of the light gold colour (top right) to the outer eyes. Available at €55

Long Lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil in #11 Black Ink – For the smokiness, a generous amount of liner was used along the top & bottom lash lines, and buffed out to create a smokey eyeshadow look. This really looked great and will be easier to achieve when I do it myself. Available at €25

Baby Doll Mascara in #1 Black – This mascara was applied onto my upper & lower lashes, and gosh was I impressed. The wand for the Baby Doll mascaras has two different types of bristles: one on side they’re thick and spaced out, and on the other they’re fine and close by. This creates a perfect ‘eyes wide open’ look, and once applied you can really see the difference. Available at €32.50

Baby Doll Kiss & Blush in #10 Nude Insolent – Now that the eyes were ready, it was time for a bit of colour. Fred used their latest duo product for a blushing look on my cheek, creating a trio of dots in an inverted triangle at the top of my cheekbones that he simply buffed out for a flawless blush. Available at €29

Rouge Pur Couture The Mats in #208 Fuchsia Fetiche – To finish the look, we would have used a subtler colour but Fred wanted to be a bit wild with the lip colour and I definitely did not object. I love a bright lip and so we agreed on this gorgeous matte finish. The second I saw the result in the mirror, I fell in love with the lipstick (so I bought it!). The matte finish is really flattering and still moisturising on the lips. Available at €33

Black Opium Eau de Parfum – A spritz of the new fragrance and I was ready to go, and tackle the rest of my day during the Dublin Fashion Festival. This perfume has notes of black coffee, white florals and vanilla for that glam rock scent. Available from €58

Many thanks to Fred Létailléur and the whole team at YSL in Brown Thomas!
