On Sunday night, the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards took place in sunny Los Angeles. The show itself was entertaining, from comedian Jay Pharaoh’s imitations, to Taylor Swift’s comedic lines during her on-stage performance, to the winners’ speeches and of course Mrs. Carter’s medley before accepting her honorary award. The red carpet had many ladies strutting their stuff too, so read on to find out who made Killer Fashion’s Best Dressed list.
Opening The Show
Ariana Grande opened the show in a bedazzled sparkling bodysuit by The Blonds with matching over-the knee boots, performing “Break Free” (which you can watch here). Ariana also won her first Moonman for Best Pop Video for “Problem” with Iggy Azalea.
Nicki Minaj walked the VMA red carpet donning a gold & bronze leopard print mini dress by Saint Laurent. Her shoulder-length black curls and cat eye makeup were very diva-esque, which matched her non-smiling attitude down the carpet. She matched designer with nude pumps adding to the sexy but not OTT look. Nicki was the second performer for the opening of the show, donning a green glittery costume bikini, with high-waisted bottoms, black patent hi-tops and painted on fishnets, for her performance of “Anaconda” (which you can watch here).
Jessie J then came out to perform her new song “Big Bang” (which you can watch here), with both Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. Jessie wore a silver & black crocodile pattern mini dress with high splits on her sides showing a lot of side-ass. Ariana changed into a black & white striped bodysuit whereas Nicki changed into a black slit mini dress, though she seemed to have some sort of wardrobe malfunction as she held her dress at the front for her rapping.
A Splash of Colour
Taylor Swift graced the red carpet in a baby blue embellished playsuit by Mary Katrantzou. The piece featured alphabet patterns in ochre and was worn with Elie Saab plum-coloured booties. Taylor later performed her brand new song “Shake It Off” (which you can watch here), in a 1920s-inspired Swarovski embellished & fringed custom two-piece shorts set. Her cute stage performance was designed by Lorena Sarbu, which she teamed with silver heels, red lipstick & cat eyes. Her performance was super on-point, and she even included a comedic monologue.
Gwen Stefani wore a hot pink & black two-piece from her own label L.A.M.B. Couture. The songstress kept to her signature platinum blonde rockabilly roll, dramatic cat eye makeup and smooth pink lipstick and added Lorraine Schwartz jewels and black lace pumps to really work it. I adore this look, definitely my best dressed on the night.
Model Joan Smalls joined the party donning a colourful creation by Balmain. Her beaded look consisted of a poncho-and-dress ensemble in Native American designs, which she teamed with Chopard jewellery, black Christian Louboutin sandals, natural curls and thick mascara-lined eyes. She looked every part model from head to toe.
Rita Ora was a knockout in red, donning Donna Karan Atelier for the occasion. Her silky deep-v gown had heads turning, especially with its thigh-high split and exaggeated train. The singer matched red lipstick and high-impact lashes with her slicked back hairdo to the lingerie-like look, and added a diamond choker necklace, silver & ruby earrings as well as an assortment of rings. She later performed “Black Widow” with Iggy Azalea, changing into a black spiderweb cut out catsuit, similar to Iggy’s, (which you can watch here).
Actress Jamie Chung was also in attendance wearing red, but by Versace. Her embellished mini was short & sweet, and matched Jamie’s phyisque perfectly. She teamed the look with Staurt Weitzman nude sandals, a sleek ponytail and pink lipstick.
Monochrome Madness
Miley Cyrus wore a black leather two-piece by Alexander Vauthier. Her look wasn’t shocking but very chic & fashionable, from the high-waisted pants to the folded over detail on the bandeau, with silver sandals, minimal jewellery and pink lipgloss. Miley also won Music Video of the Year for “Wrecking Ball”, which I’m of course ecstatic about! However what Miley did for her acceptance speech speaks so much more than the usual thank-yous; My Friend’s Place representative Jesse spoke about the homeless young people situation and encouraged those who want to help to do so. (You can watch the video here)
Joining the all-black look, and the bandeau crop look too, Jourdan Dunn stepped out in Balmain. The look worked wonders for the leggy model, who kept her pins under wraps in the fishtail skirt, and showcased her fresh chopped hair which took years off the already-young model.
I must say I’m surprised at how much I liked Victoria Justice’s look for the VMAs. Her black & white Alice+Olivia and LUBLU Kira Plastinina ensemble featured a cropped strapless bustier and waterfall ruffled skirt. She teamed this with a lemon yellow Edie Parker clutch that bore ‘#hashtag’ print, embellished bow pumps, a high plaited ponytail and pink lipstick. Very chic indeed.
Pretty Little Liars actress and country singer Lucy Hale donned not one but two looks on the red carpet before the show started! She started off in a fuchsia pink & black mini skater dress by Oscar de la Renta, which she wore with a metallic waistbelt and hot pink pumps to match. Her second all-black leather ensemble was a two-piece featuring a Sachin+Babi crop top and Zimmerman floral-printed full skirt. I do prefer her colourful look this latter leather one.
Destiny’s Child
Beyoncé walked the red carpet in Nicolas Jebran Couture. Her longsleeved black peekaboo dress featured spiderweb-like cut outs and glittery sequin embellishments in its figure-hugging form that always does wonders for Queen Bey’s body shape. Oversized black & silver rock earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, shimmery eyeshadow and a nude lipgloss finished off her stunning look. Later Beyoncé took to the stage to close the show and performed a medley of her album, (which you can watch here), before a standing ovation and being honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by her husband and daughter Jay Z & Blue Ivy. She donned a mirror-embellished bodysuit by Tom Ford and later changed into a deep red sequin-mesh Zuhair Murad gown. Beyoncé also won Best Collaboration for “Drunk in Love” with Jay Z, Best Video With a Social Message & Best Cinematography for “Pretty Hurts”.
Mama-to-be Kelly Rowland wowed in a peachy nude-coloured sequinned gown by Kaufmanfranco. Her simply elegant haltergown suited the pregnant singer perfectly, which she styled with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery, pink lipstick and a plaited crown updo.
Michelle Williams joined her Destiny’s Child sisters in a black & white animal print haltergown by Roberto Cavalli. The dress featured a keyhole detail that complimented her mid split perfectly. Straight hair, pink lipstick, smokey eyes and Jimmy Choo accessories finished off her hot look.
Queen Bey’s lil sis Solange also attended, wearing a black sparkling tuxedo suit from the H&M Studio Collection sans shirt with the jacket being an oversized squared style. She wore Stuart Weitzman and Stephen Webster accessories, orangey-red false lashes and styled her fro into a frizzy do to complete the look.
Metallic Madness
Jennifer Lopez had all eyes on her in a cut out sparkling gown by Charbel Zoe that featured a super thigh-high split. JLo wore Jimmy Choo ‘Tartini’ pumps to match, styled her hair straight with soft smokey eyes and a nude lip. This look was very JLo, sexy and strong.
Keeping to her more demure turnaround, Kesha looked beautiful in a pearl-embellished v-cut gown by Johanna Johnson. The dress cinched in at the waist, creating a beautful figure for the singer, who was all smiles on the night. Her rainbow-washed hair didn’t distract too much and she also kept her jewellery & accessories at a minimum. Great job Kesha, me likey!
Notable Mentions
WTF Moment
Seriously though Katy Perry. I’m guessing it’s an ode to that Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake moment circa 2001. And u’m sure she was just having fun. But oh how this look is tacky on so many levels… Wearing matching denim-on-denim by Atelier Versace with a sparkly waistbelt, red lipstick and black soft waves.
