I always look forward to the annual MET Costume Gala, which was held in New York City this year. This year’s theme was “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”, so naturally I was very much looking forward to the dresses and attire the ladies showed up in. Sadly to my dismay, the majority of red carpet outfits were not up to the challenge, but there was still a large handful of ladies who pulled out all the right stops.

Couture Queens

Katy Perry definitely stuck to the theme, wearing a couture-worthy Dolce & Gabbana dress from their latest Fall Collection 2014. Kasia is a fully sequined dress, with a high scoop neck, half-length sleeves and cuts off at the knee. What makes this dress more unique is the motif, which shows D&G’s inspiration by the mosaic of Monreale. Katy teamed this metallic-yet-colourful dress with matching D&G gold crucifix drop earrings and a crown, and D&G embellished block heel pumps in black. Along with black hair, vampy plum lipstick and Katy’s porcelain skintone, she did a great job.

My favourite ‘it girl’ and actress, Jennifer Lawrence walked the carpet in Christian Dior Fall Collection 2013 RTW. JLaw and Dior make perfection look easy. She wore an amazing embellished leather tulle gown, entitled Miss Dior 1949. The fully embellished strapless dress was worn with a thin black belt, and uniquely teamed with a black birdcage veil and Brian Atwood ‘Shina’ platforms; floral appliqué on the back, peep toe and slingback. JLaw’s make up was as flawless as her fashion, red lipstick and simple black eyeliner.

Beyoncé is no doubtedly one of this year’s Best Dressed at the MET Gala, and hands down; she deserves it. Queen B wore Givenchy Fall 2013 RTW, a stunning strapless gown that featured fiery-coloured printed damask. The short bodice was of crocodile-like leather, whereas the skirt and long train was made up of a digitally printed paisley-like pattern in gold, orange, yellow and contrasting black. The skirt also featured a thigh-high left split, which showed off the matching patterned over-the-knee boots Beyoncé wore, which also matched the gloves she wore. Her look was finished with a black grommet waistbelt and Ofira gemstone drop earrings. With such a dramatic dress, I’m happy Beyoncé wore her hair down with simple make up.

Florence + The Machine frontwoman, Florence Welch, rocked the red carpet, also wearing Givenchy Couture Fall 2012. The Givenchy creation is a black velvet dress with a leather upper bodice and built-in embroidered leather belt. The couture feel is represented by the dress’ all-over upper bodice, sleeves and back full fringe detailing. The long sleeves also feature embellished appliqué capped shoulders, and the dress has a front split. The singer styled the couture gown with tousled hair and her full fringe, barely-there make up, black nails and lace up knee-height boots. Florence definitely fit the themed bill of the Gala.

Paloma Faith has been all over red carpets as of late, and thank goodness. This singer brings couture to a new level, taking stunning risks. Her Michael Cinco gown is just beautiful. It is fully covered in embellishments & sequins and gradients from red to black from the neck down. The sheer panelled open back dress shows off Paloma’s bird tattoos, which somehow adds to the theme even more. The silhouette sleeve-to-gloves dress also features a train, and Paloma styled the look with a wondrous structured updo, floral and spikes hat by Irish milliner Philip Treacy and red lippy.

Perfectly Punkified

Anne Hathaway blew me away! Her look was my favourite on the night. Not only did her dress show off the MET Gala’s theme, but her HAIR did too. Girl dyed it platinum blonde! The Grammy winning actress wore Valentino Couture from head to toe, sporting a risqué sheer vintage gown with black sequins, fully sheer v-cut panels from the shoulder, and black feather cuffs. The whole look was just amazing. Valentino accessories to complete.

Taylor Swift was one of the leading ladies adhering to the punk to couture theme. She wore a black J. Mendel gown with cut out lace inserts on the bodice and down the sides, and a gold jewel encrusted embellished neckline with capped shoulders. The dramatic dress worked great on Taylor; she finished her look with smokey eyes and pulled back crimped hair.

My beloved Miley Cyrus also attended the Gala, and stayed true to her newfound love for all things punk. Wearing Marc Jacobs Fall 2013, Miley stunned in a fishnet mesh long-sleeved floor-length dress. The velvet cuffs & neckline and cut off hem detailing added to the minimalistic look Miley went for. She wore the nude slip underneath, for which I’m glad she didn’t alter in any way. Teamed with Eddie Borgo statement rings and silver patent leather cut out platform sandals by Prada. Though I really love the dress and accessories, I really am not mad on the hairstyle. I love her platinum blonde pixie cut, but she overly spiked it, yet worked it with her red lippy.

Sienna Miller was as cute as a button and she totally rocked the theme! The actress/model wore a white silk deep-v gown with a slight train and open back, and teamed it with a rockin’ stud-and-spike covered cropped leather jacket, both by Burberry. Sienna added more spikes to her look with an Eddie Borgo cone tiara (comb) in her hair.

Model Cara Delevigne also stayed true to the punk theme with a spike-covered gown. Following in fellow Brit’s footsteps, Cara also wore Burberry. The top model wore a stunning black floor-length dress, cut into a deep and slightly wide plunge, with the upper half of the dress and full sleeves completely covered in silver spike studs. Cara braids her hair into a sidesweep, styled the dress white a white & silver studded clutch and dark make up.
